Gipper Here is what I have found for you on the date. The date is the Letter before the serial number. The H&R sportsman single action model 199. Startdate Required. A date that represents the start date. Dates should be entered by using the DATE function, or as results of other formulas or functions. For example, use DATE(2008,5,23) for the 23rd day of May, 2008. Problems can occur if dates are entered as text. Months Required. The number of months before or after startdate. Maytag Serial Numbers. Over the years Maytag has increased the number of digits in the serial number. However, only the last two digits are non-numeric alphabet characters. The breakdown for Maytag Serial Numbers is: 1st Alpha Character = Year Manufactured 2nd Alpha Character = Month Manufactured. Please enter the serial number of your firearm below and click search. have a code located on the left side of the barrel
near the frame that identifies the year and month of
manufacture. The following letters correspond to the
months of the year, for example B=January, L= February
and so on:

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.
Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box.
They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.
